4 Brushes Per Set Technical Tip #1: If the top of the brush is level with the top of the brush guide, then the brush is getting very short and in need of replacement soon. Keep in mind that one brush may wear faster than others, so check all four. Please click on the picture to see an example of worn brushes.
Technical Tip #2: As the brushes completely wear out, the engine will begin to have trouble starting because the brushes can not quite reach the commutator bars on the armature. This poor contact causes arcing (sparks) at the brush end and the copper commutator bars become burned and pitted (you can see this with a flaslight). Usually this condition can be corrected by disassembling the unit and cleaning the bars with a non-metallic sanding paper like crocus cloth. You should be able to locate these items at your local automotive parts stores.
